Gasp! A serious journal! From Patrick!

Thu Mar 23, 2006, 10:20 AM
Just on the subject of the irish tricolour - our flag.

It's a flag of equal parts green, white and orange - quite simple, but it has a meaning.

The green symbolises the catholics on this island, the orange the protestants, and the white, placed between the two, symbolises peace.

I started to think about this because of a stray comment I heard on St. Patrick's Day about how the tricolour was not included in the parade in Belfast. Someone said, "But it's a symbol of peace, it shouldn't provoke anyone."

My response to this now, after a few days of thinking about it is, "But it does, because of the abuse of the flag." The tricolour provokes people because they fear it.
For the past 30 years, this flag has been used as a war banner, and worse, in a war that has mostly been between catholics and protestants. Nationalists in the north, many of them having grown up in the south, have used it as their standard in their war against "unionists", which they take to mean "protestants and those that sympathise with them".
I amn't claiming that the other side were any better, they weren't, but at least they didn't corrupt something that was created as a symbol of peace.

End of rant.
